When I was first learning Java, I found that the web was a great place to find some introductory tutorials, forums, and quizzes, but I also found something a bit disturbing. Plenty of sites that claim to be introductory are just too complicated for the beginner. Acronyms are thrown out like confetti at a parade, and site moderators just expect you to know what all of these mysterious terms mean. These sites are discouraging to the Java newcomer, so here is a list of great sites for beginners.
The JavaRanch dubs itself as “a friendly place for Java greenhorns”, and friendly it is.
This site is especially helpful if you're studying for certification in Java. The people who frequent the forums are not as prone to “Java-speak” as you find on other more advanced sites. It has a friendly atmosphere and it’s a great place to get your feet wet.
Although this site is actually a
free online book, it still provides thorough coverage of beginning concepts. Don’t be intimidated by the section titles, like “Asynchronous Events: Polling Loops and Interrupts”. Although the sections titles are a little baffling, once you start reading you’ll see that the topics are clear and easy to comprehend.
This site will help you step-by-step, from downloading the Java development Kit to compiling and running your own programs.
